Dummy Shots

Here are the dummy shots we took of our video. We did these as a tester so that when it came to the final production of it, we had a better idea of what would be needed in the editing process.

The first scene uses a layering effect on Final Cut where there are 2 Becca's on the screen at the same location. This was a little difficult to do on our own, and so needed the help of Adam to show us how to gain the effect we wanted. It was difficult keeping the camera still in order to gain 2 of the same shot as it was tilted down at an angle, and was not supported by the tripod. Although the shot is edited, it is not what we intend to film for our music video, this was just to show the process we will be using. We will be spending more time and applying more effort to our real video, in order to make it more polished and neat.

In the second shot is a cut-frame whereby we stopped recording and then started again, after I (becca) had moved to a different position. This enabled a smooth and well timed transition which allowed to edit the parts we wanted together giving the illusion of movement

Risk Assesment

Here is our risk assessment for our music video.
We found that there were not many hazards or risks involved in the production of our video, as many of our locations are safe, and all crew are competent. All equipment has been safety checked and locations have been assessed for problems.

Although we didn't cover all of the topics on this risk assessment, we weren't going to be filming at heights, so no need for that to be focused on. Weather conditions were another factor, as we were going to be filming outside a lot, so didn't want it to be windy, or else the tripod could have fallen over, and didn't want it to be raining, or else it could have got into the camera, and damaged it. Tripping hazards were also quite high as we were filming on grass and bumpy car parks, were tripping could be quite possible.

Animatic

Becca and I have been doing our animatic and some dummy shots for our music video (also YouTubing videos for further research.....)
Here is our animatic for the video. And when there are some boys dancing, the first lot are meant to be girls. Sorta forgot to scan the girls one in...ah well. Get the jist.

Hope you can understand most of it! We know what we are on about.

Once the dummy shots have been edited and what not, they will also be put on the blog for your viewing pleasure....

Until next time,

Video Analysis & Research

Here is the song that me (Nat) & Becca are doing for our media coursework....hopefully the link will work. This is the original video for it.

The factors we liked of this video were the use of blue screening, the quick cut shot rate and the bright colours from their clothes and the background. I like the video, apart from the cheap blue screen of a beach and another of palm trees as that contrasted the rest of the video, which ruined the ending. The dance routine is also a good idea, and might entwine that into the video, especially when the lyrics: 'imagine all the girls ahahahahah and the boys ahahahaha etc' as the beat is very danceable.

The way that we came about choosing the song was from discarding a previous choice of 'The Gossip' but not knowing which song to do of theirs, so when researching 'The Gossip' we came across 'Ting Tings' and chose their first song 'Great DJ'. The song is quirky and uptempo, which gave us many ideas for the video on hearing the song once.
We went for this genre of dancy rock as it is not our normal genre of music, and didnt want to choose a song we liked, and then by the end of the production process would hate it, so went for a song we didnt mind hating.
The idea we finally came up with was to have a performance sequence whenever the chorus came on, and during the versus, to take the lyrics literally and show them in a physical form.

Other ideas we had were to:
  • have kids playing the instruments to show the innocence of the band, as it was their first song. That idea was put aside as we couldnt find kids who looked 'the part'. And whose parents would let them, more to the point.
  • to use childs instruments, with teenagers playing them, for a comedic value. That idea was scrapped as we couldnt get our hands on the right instruments. (Inspired by Kaiser Chiefs: Oh My God video)
  • to have a mixture of kids and teenagers, trying to find kids who looked like the older version, perhaps using younger relatives. This proved difficult as some teenagers didnt have younger relatives who looked like them, so there was not mich point. (Inspired by The View: The Don video)
  • For most of it to be an animation. Neither me nor Becca know animation and in the strict time limit, this would have been very difficult to have leant a whole new skill.

Here are some of the other videos we watched to get a more rounded view of the genre as part of our research:

New Young Pony Club: Ice Cream

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iF8AYLVwAc

Like the Ting Tings, the colour palette is very bright, an aspect we would like to recreate. Use of blue screening is shown, like the 'Great DJ' viedo. We would like to use blue screen, but not as a background, just as part of a poster for a performance scene. The cut rate is quite quick, and like our song, it will be (mostly) every 4 beats that the image will change (either location or camera angle).

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Gold Lion

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO5iOxKhfs0

This video has a beginning part which is not part of the song, just a mood setter. The main concept of the video is fire. There is fire in the background, guitars on fire, and the lead singers (Karen O) eyes become fire towards the end. The lighting is very dark, flickers of light from the fire seems to be the only source on the actual image on the screen. From this video, there aren't many things that would be included in ours, but I do like the attitude that the lead singer has. Her strut, her manners. So might carry that through to our performer.

The Gossip: Standing In The Way Of Control

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMFExJzaO1c

This was our first choice of song, as the vocals are so strong and the repetitive beat could go with anything. Again, blue screening has been used. I'm not a fan of this type as it looks fake, but its does go with the crazy nature of the song. I also like The Gossips drummer as she is very straight backed and only using the same equipment we will have, so that gives us a good idea of the posture our drummer should take.
